Welcome, I'm Dr. Christi Bemister.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and dedicated teacher with over 30 years of experience with a specialty in chronic pain and trauma. Driven by my journey through chronic pain, I know firsthand it is possible to heal, and I am passionate about teaching you what I know.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The course is delivered online, in a self-paced format, offering a flexible learning experience. Organized into five modules, each offering informational content and reflective questions to engage with the material deeply. 

 

The focus is on the importance of compassionate self-treatment, psychological, emotional, and physical dimensions of pain, key concepts such as the difference between acute and chronic pain, brain areas affected by chronic pain, and the potential for healing by learning empirically validated intervention skills.

Module 1: Pain is a Psychophysical Perception

Understanding Pain: Sensitivity, Nociceptors, and Chronic Pain Management. We explore the concept of pain sensitivity as a learned response. Delving into the psychophysical nature of pain, highlighting the role of stress and emotions in chronic pain

Module 4: Chronic Pain Types & Affected Brain Areas

The lesson covers primary and secondary chronic pain, the roles of the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, and how changes in white and gray matter affect our pain perception, emotions, and overall cognitive functions.

Module 2: Old and New Science

Discussion of various scientific disciplines and their perspectives on chronic pain. Introducing multiple healing modalities including allopathic medicine, holistic approaches, neuroscience, and quantum psychology. Detailing each modality's approach to health and pain management.

Finally, the focus of this lesson, is on the guiding principles that aid in managing chronic pain.  Key insights include understanding the brain's adaptability, the power of learning self-validation, and the role of new learning in the healing process.

This Lesson we delve into how chronic pain develops and the complex brain processes involved. Key concepts include the transformation of acute to chronic pain, the psychological impact of pain, and strategies for therapeutic practice.
